The latest edition of Einstein magazine shines a spotlight on the work of faculty members who are making strides both at the bench and at the bedside. Here are two examples from the magazine.
The cover story in this edition details Einstein and Montefiore’s decades-long commitment to providing treatment and therapies to patients confronting opioid drug addiction. Though the opioid epidemic has recently received a ton of attention nationally, doctors here in the Bronx have been learning lessons from working with patients with opioid addiction over the past several decades. And they’re using that knowledge to train physicians how to provide better care. As Dr. Julia H. Arnsten states in the article, “Opioid dependence and related deaths have been high in the Bronx for decades and are now even higher. Sadly, the rest of the country is now catching up.”

How important is autophagy? In October, scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi received the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his pioneering studies in the field.
In the magazine, Dr. Cuervo states: “I’m not claiming that ‘fixing’ autophagy will be a cure-all, but it may do a lot. Autophagy is a fundamental mechanism in the cell. And if the cell is cleaning up after itself, other things in the body will start to function more efficiently.”
